Yankees’ Hal Steinbrenner Supports Aaron Boone’s Return for 2027 Season

Aaron Boone is set to return as the manager of the New York Yankees for the 2027 season, which will be the final year of his current contract, as confirmed by the team on Wednesday.

Owner Hal Steinbrenner and general manager Brian Cashman held a video conference with reporters to talk about the upcoming 2026 season and the future of Boone, whose position came under considerable scrutiny following the Yankees’ most recent exit from the postseason.

The roster assembled by Cashman, who also confirmed his contract extension, and Boone’s management received support from Steinbrenner. The Yankees’ owner acknowledged the team’s pitching strengths but emphasized multiple times that the offense was a significant factor in the team not meeting their championship aspirations.

“Every year, I evaluate the situation,” Steinbrenner remarked regarding Boone’s future. “I don’t believe you can attribute the season and its unsatisfactory conclusion solely to Aaron. I don’t feel it’s fair to lay the blame on [Cashman], considering the roster he constructed. The offensive performance, not the pitching, but the offense, played a crucial role in why we didn’t reach our goals this year, which we absolutely aim to achieve.”

“This was evident throughout the year. In the postseason, if you examine their performance against the two starting pitchers from Boston and how they fared against nearly all the Rays pitchers, it was simply inadequate. I can’t express it any differently. If runs aren’t scored, victory is unattainable. We all recognize this.”

Steinbrenner mentioned that he had a lengthy discussion lasting a week about Boone’s situation but ultimately did not consider the manager to be part of the problems plaguing the team.

“I don’t see him as a part of it,” Steinbrenner stated. “I believe he managed well this year. Naturally, I would contemplate moving on from Aaron Boone if I thought he was a major contributor to the issues, and I can certainly, without naming specifics, cite other managers in different organizations that were part of the problem, which led to their dismissal.

“In this case, I just don’t think that’s applicable.”

Boone agreed to a two-year extension extending through the 2027 MLB campaign back in February 2025, a few months subsequent to the Yankees’ defeat in the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Following two consecutive eliminations in the ALDS, there were assumptions that Boone’s tenure might be coming to an end in New York after nine years. Instead, he will continue managing the team until at least the conclusion of his current contract.

The Yankees finished the 2026 season in second place in the AL East for the second consecutive year, securing 90 wins for the seventh time in a full season under Boone. However, it’s in the postseason where the Yankees have frequently struggled under the 53-year-old’s leadership.

Boone’s Yankees possess a playoff record of 27-30 during his tenure, which features three appearances in the ALCS and one World Series showing. His teams hold an 18-5 record as the higher seed in a playoff series and a 9-25 record when they are lower seeds. The Yankees entered the 2026 playoffs as the No. 4 seed, defeating the No. 5 seed Boston Red Sox in the wild-card round but were ousted by the top-seeded Tampa Rays in the ALDS.

With Aaron Judge sidelined and Giancarlo Stanton only able to play as a pinch-hitter, the Yankees registered a batting average of .130 in the ALDS, with three of their five RBIs coming courtesy of Ben Rice. Their pitching was stellar, demonstrated by a 1.88 team ERA, a 0.81 team WHIP, and .173 opponent batting average.

“I felt Boone did a commendable job managing this year, particularly with the pitching staff,” Steinbrenner said. “He guided us to the playoffs, but ultimately, the players did not meet their responsibilities in the postseason.”

In playoff scenarios, other teams have frequently recognized the shortcomings of Boone’s Yankees squads. The Dodgers informed their players that their 2024 World Series opponents were “talent over fundamentals” and would likely implode. Toronto Blue Jays broadcaster Buck Martinez referred to the AL East rivals as “not a good team” last season, citing their tendency to make mistakes in the field and on the bases.

Those critiques were only reinforced after Austin Wells’ baserunning blunder in Game 1 of the ALDS against the Rays and the Yankees’ defensive slip-up in Game 2.

Cashman has served as general manager for 29 seasons. Boone is the third manager to work under him. The Yankees last claimed the World Series in 2009 and find themselves in the midst of a 17-year championship drought. The boos that followed Trent Grisham’s series-ending strikeout against the Rays were indicative of the fanbase’s dissatisfaction with the team’s current situation.

Nonetheless, despite the sentiment, Cashman appears reluctant to seek a new manager at this time. It remains uncertain what significant shifts he will implement this offseason, if any, in an effort to restore the franchise’s contender status, which continues to be the ownership’s objective.

“That is our mission, that is our goal,” Steinbrenner stated.
