Micah Parsons naps during preseason, jokes about trade.

The status of Micah Parsons will continue to be a prominent issue for the Dallas Cowboys until the standout player commits to a contract extension or departs from the team. This was apparent both in the lead-up to and during their final preseason contest on Friday.

Prior to Friday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons, Parsons was walking to the locker room and passed by a tour group that was visiting AT&T Stadium. One individual, a Falcons supporter, shouted, “Come to the Falcons” at him.

Parsons responded with a “give me a call” hand motion as he walked by while enjoying nachos.

Parsons’ commitment to a future with the Cowboys didn’t appear to strengthen as the game progressed. In the third quarter, reporters observed him reclining on a trainer’s table on the sideline. This offers a glimpse into the Cowboys’ potential situation in 2025.

Parsons defended his actions following the game, responding to broadcaster Mike Leslie’s comment that he was only on the table for “a relatively short portion of the evening” and claiming that the media was overstating the situation.

He stated that he would never show disrespect towards his teammates who were actively participating on the field.

Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer stated after the game that he maintains confidence that Parsons will be playing for

Parsons reportedly made his request for a trade on August 1 and has remained absent from practices since the beginning of training camp, citing a back injury. Negotiations between Parsons’ representatives and the Cowboys have reportedly deteriorated in recent months and may have reached a new low point recently.

While Parsons has remained relatively silent regarding the matter, team owner Jerry Jones has consistently expressed his thoughts on what he believes the team’s premier defensive player should do. He identified Parsons’ agent, David Mulugheta, as a source of the problem, alleging that the prominent agent rejected a verbal agreement that was in place between the team owner and the player (who is entitled to representation and has the right to follow his agent’s advice).

Jones continued his stance the following morning, voicing his disapproval of the concept of an individual negotiating on behalf of a player. He has also dismissed the possibility of trading Parsons and has threatened to use the franchise tag on him twice once his rookie contract expires this year, effectively keeping the All-Pro player with Dallas for an additional three years.

This approach seemingly does not seem to appeal Parsons, who has reacted by deleting all mentions of the Cowboys from his social media platforms and posts on TikTok and X. Parsons is now openly entertaining the possibility of a trade while at the Cowboys’ home stadium.

At issue is a contract that could potentially become the largest ever for a non-quarterback in the NFL. Jones has indicated that he has already presented an offer containing more guaranteed money than any other defensive player, although this may have occurred in March when the benchmark was Nick Bosa’s $88 million from the San Francisco 49ers. The current record is T.J. Watt’s $108 million, which was agreed upon last month.

With four Pro Bowl selections in his initial four seasons and still only 26 years of age, it’s not surprising that Parsons is seeking a substantial agreement.
