During Liverpool’s 3-2 victory against Newcastle United, Anthony Gordon received a straight red card for a challenge where his studs made contact with Van Dijk’s leg.
The Toon winger occupied the forward position for the second consecutive game, a decision influenced by uncertainty surrounding Alexander Isak’s transfer situation and the Swedish player’s subsequent absence.
As Gordon attempted to pressure the Liverpool captain, who had possession of the ball late in the first half, he made contact with Van Dijk’s leg, initially resulting in a yellow card.

Upon review by VAR official Simon Hooper, the referee was shown a slow-motion replay of the incident, after which the initial booking was overturned and Gordon was given a straight red card.
Newcastle trailed by one goal at halftime and then conceded another goal just 20 seconds into the second half after Hugo Ekitike scored.

Despite being down a man, the Magpies fought back, scoring two goals through Bruno Guimaraes and Will Osula to equalize before Rio Ngumoha scored the winning goal in the 100th minute.
Following the match, Gordon expressed his sentiments on social media, posting a message on his Instagram account stating: “I would like to offer my sincere apologies to my teammates and the fans.”
“My intentions were good. I was simply trying to inject some intensity into the game, and I misjudged the challenge. I also want to apologize to Virgil; I never intended to make such a tackle on someone intentionally. We talked afterward, and he understands that.
“Most importantly, I am incredibly proud of the time I spent on the field and the way we performed tonight. The atmosphere created by all of you is what makes SJP [St. James’ Park] so exceptional. I cherish everything we represent as a club, now more than ever. I will return stronger, just as I have overcome every other setback I have faced. See you soon.”
Gordon will be unavailable for Newcastle’s upcoming three matches against Leeds United (A), Wolverhampton Wanderers (H), and Bournemouth (A) due to suspension.
However, he remains eligible to participate in Newcastle’s Champions League matches during this period.
