🐦 Highlights for the Day
- Thrilling Conclusion on “Thursday Night Football.” After a narrowly missed attempt from 53 yards, Seattle’s kicker, Jason Myers , secured a 23-20 victory against the Cardinals with a successful 52-yard field goal. The special teams play overshadowed a notable comeback effort by Kyler Murray and Arizona, who scored twice in the fourth quarter to nearly overcome a 20-6 deficit.
- Los Angeles Dominates NL West Again. Los Angeles has secured another division title, their 12th in 13 years, as they aim to defend their World Series title. But the Dodgers weren’t alone in potential clinching scenarios on Thursday. The Mariners, having already claimed the AL West, will enjoy a Wild Card Series bye due to the Guardians‘ defeat. While the Tigers narrowed the gap with the Guardians, they are at a disadvantage regarding the AL Central tiebreaker.
- The Lakers Extended JJ Redick’s Contract While Allowing LeBron James Control Over His Future. Lakers executive Rob Pelinka surprised many by announcing Redick’s contract extension following his first season as a coach. The duration of the extension remains unclear, but Redick was originally contracted for four seasons. James’ future is less certain. Pelinka emphasized the Lakers’ commitment to letting James “craft his own narrative” as he approaches free agency.
- William Saliba Recommits to Arsenal. A world-class defender, Arsenal star William Saliba, will stay with the Gunners, signing a five-year extension. This is a major accomplishment for Arsenal, positioning them as a top global soccer club. This development may frustrate Real Madrid, who were eager to add Saliba as a key defensive player.
- Patriots Offer Partial Ownership. Robert Kraft and the Patriots have agreed to sell minority stakes in the franchise to Dean Metropoulos (5%) and Sixth Street Partners (3%), valuing the team at $9 billion. The Kraft family is one of several ownership groups exploring the sale of minority interests, including the Giants, Bears, and 49ers, who plan to present their deals at the upcoming league meetings. Some have questioned if Kraft should have considered selling a stake to Tom Brady instead. Our Tyler Sullivan explores this alternate scenario.
