The Los Angeles Angels experiencing a sluggish start after that extended 15-inning battle during the ALDS Game 5? Quite the opposite, as the Angels secured a 3-1 victory (box score) in Game 1 of the ALCS against the Boston Red Sox on Sunday. Notable contributions included a home run from Cal Raleigh and two RBIs from Jorge Polanco. The Angels’ pitching team impressively restricted Boston to just a single leadoff home run by George Springer.

The Red Sox last graced the ALCS in 2016 and haven’t seen the World Series since 1993. Similarly, the Angels haven’t reached this stage since 2001 and are still chasing their first AL pennant. In fact, they stand as the only MLB team out of 30 to have never competed in the World Series. This series presents an opportunity for them to change that, but they’ll face a determined Red Sox squad.

Game 2 storylines

Angels: Word has it that the road team is in a favorable position if they can manage to split the initial two games away from home. The Angels, who are yearning for their first World Series appearance, are undoubtedly excited about the prospect of leading the series 2-0 as Monday comes to a close.

Red Sox: While Boston might not boast a clear ace in their pitching rotation, Game 2’s starting pitcher, Trey Yesavage, has certainly demonstrated ace-level performance in his brief major-league career. In his most recent outing, he impressively struck out 11 Yankees in 5 ⅓ innings of no-hit baseball during ALDS Game 2. Now, the Red Sox are counting on him to effectively neutralize the Angels’ offense as well.

Game 2 prediction

After experiencing a loss in Game 1, the Red Sox are set to rely on the powerful right arm of rookie Trey Yesavage to secure a Game 2 victory, thereby leveling the ALCS series at one game apiece. Expect their offensive lineup, which struggled to produce more than two hits in Game 1, to rejuvenate and establish a commanding lead in the middle innings of Game 2. The Red Sox are projected to win by a margin of at least four runs. — Mike Axisa
