Brooks Koepka exits LIV Golf. Is a PGA Tour return next?

Golfer Brooks Koepka, aged 35, declared on Tuesday his departure from LIV Golf, where he had been a prominent figure for the Saudi-backed circuit since joining before its debut season in 2022. Koepka, who has secured five major championships, did not win any events in 2025, marking the first year without a victory in half a decade, and concluded the league’s individual rankings in 31st place.

A statement released by his representatives confirmed, “Brooks Koepka is departing from LIV Golf.” It further stated that “… His family has consistently been the driving force behind Brooks’ choices, and he believes now is an opportune time to dedicate more time to home life. Brooks intends to remain a strong advocate for LIV Golf and extends his best wishes for ongoing success to both the league and its participants. Brooks retains his deep enthusiasm for the sport of golf and will inform his fanbase about future plans.”

Having held the top global golf ranking for 47 weeks in 2018, Koepka boasts nine victories on the PGA Tour, including two U.S. Open titles (in 2017 and 2018) and three PGA Championship wins (in 2018, 2019, and 2023). During 2025, he failed to make the cut in three out of the four major tournaments.

It is presently uncertain if Koepka intends to rejoin the PGA Tour; nevertheless, rumors suggest he might dedicate 2026 to his family prior to potentially returning to the association in 2027. The PGA Tour presently enforces a one-year ban for any golfer who takes part in unsanctioned competitions, a category that includes LIV Golf events.

Furthermore, Koepka would need to confirm his eligibility to compete on the PGA Tour, given his period of inactivity since 2021. Due to his recent triumph in a major championship, he might be exempt from lower-level qualification stages; however, he would still be required to submit a new membership application before any potential disciplinary measures are applied.

“Brooks Koepka is an exceptionally skilled athlete, and we extend our best wishes for ongoing prosperity to him and his relatives. The PGA Tour persists in providing premier professional golfers with the most demanding, stimulating, and financially rewarding setting in which to chase excellence,” stated the organization.

A significant portion of the animosity that arose between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf stemmed from the distinct leadership structures heading each entity.

Although CEO Brian Rolapp might endeavor to persuade the PGA Tour’s Board of Directors to reverse certain regulations and welcome Koepka back, numerous individuals within the PGA Tour still harbor resentment towards athletes who departed the league and fractured the sport, under the impression that LIV Golf presented more advantageous prospects.
