In Indianapolis, Head Coach Tommy Lloyd confirmed on Friday that he has reached an agreement on a renewed contract with the University of Arizona.
During a press conference held that Friday, he declared, “I will remain with Arizona.”
Following several days of noncommittal remarks concerning his professional future, particularly when questioned about the vacant position at North Carolina, Lloyd finalized a fresh five-year contract with the institution.
Lloyd articulated, “You are aware of the profound significance Arizona basketball holds for me, and my assertion that it is a remarkable location genuinely originates from my deepest convictions.”
Addressing speculations about phone communications from Michael Jordan regarding the Tar Heels’ coaching role – which Lloyd denied ever occurring – the 51-year-old conveyed his contentment with continuing his tenure in Tucson.
He stated, “I have concluded that Steve Kerr represents my personal Michael Jordan, and I am honored to be an Arizona Wildcat.”
According to information from ESPN, Arizona’s updated agreement with Lloyd is expected to position him among the top five highest-compensated coaches in collegiate basketball, with his earnings commencing in the 2026-27 season at almost $7.2 million and averaging $7.5 million throughout the duration of the contract.
This agreement further encompasses substantial incentive payments and an augmented allocation for the coaching staff’s wage fund. The contract’s termination clause is anticipated to retain a considerable valuation for both parties, given its full guarantee, and the penalty for departing to another position, previously set at $9 million under the preceding agreement, is predicted to stay elevated.
Lloyd commented, “I view this as an integrated strategy. It’s no longer about a single aspect. Arizona basketball must transform into a driving force, with every element contributing to its momentum.”
Lloyd conveyed his gratitude to athletic director Desiree Reed-Francois and president Suresh Garimella for their efforts in finalizing the agreement and envisioning the trajectory for Arizona basketball.
In a prepared statement, Reed-Francois declared, “Tommy Lloyd stands as the finest coach in collegiate basketball, and we possess firm confidence in the path forward for Arizona Basketball under his direction. The achievements of our program this year – securing titles, performing at the sport’s most significant events, and achieving academic distinction – underscores the benchmark he and his team have set. He has attracted and nurtured student-athletes of integrity who positively influence our squad, our university, and our wider community. Tommy has reinforced our bedrock principles while upholding the heritage that establishes Arizona Basketball as a leading national program, and we are delighted that he will persist in guiding this program with excellence for many years ahead.”
Garimella affirmed in a statement, “Coach Lloyd has directed our men’s basketball initiative with distinct objectives and a dedication to superior performance. The recently concluded season ranks among Arizona Athletics’ most successful, indicative of the ethos he has cultivated and the program’s steady progress. He has restored Arizona Basketball to its status as one of the premier programs nationwide and oversees a cohesive team that excels both athletically and academically. I am exceptionally satisfied that we have finalized an accord extending his tenure and oversight. We anticipate ongoing triumphs.”
The athletes at Arizona expressed enthusiasm for their chief coach.
Senior guard Jaden Bradley remarked, “I was certain Coach Lloyd would make the optimal choice for himself and his professional path. I’m thrilled he recommitted to Arizona. I understand the supporters are equally delighted, but I recognize he is thoroughly engaged with current affairs here, and I’m simply pleased for him and his contract extension.”
Freshman forward Koa Peat commented, “Extremely pleased for Coach. Tucson holds deep affection for him. He holds deep affection for Tucson. … He ranks among the nation’s elite coaches, and his commitment to Arizona is unwavering. That truly holds immense significance for us, undoubtedly.”
The interest from North Carolina in recruiting Lloyd had persisted as a prominent topic throughout the Final Four, as Lloyd chose not to directly refute the Tar Heels’ overtures numerous times.
On Thursday, during his pre-game press conference, when questioned about the open position, Lloyd stated, “I consider myself uncomplicated. I tend to focus on one task at a time; I’m not adept at multitasking. You can verify this with my spouse. Consequently, my complete concentration is currently directed towards Arizona basketball, and I am eager to witness the capabilities of this squad. I hold profound conviction in this team, and it warrants my undivided focus, which I am providing.”
Following Arizona’s victory against Purdue the previous weekend, while delivering an extended response concerning the importance of the Wildcats reaching the Final Four, Lloyd declared, “Arizona will certainly employ another competent coach subsequent to my departure. I assure you of that.”
On Tuesday, when prompted regarding those declarations, Lloyd reaffirmed his position.
“That is undeniably accurate,” he asserted. “A different coach will eventually be in charge. This is an excellent program. I never specified a timeline.”
“Individuals are free to conjecture as much as they wish. Gentlemen, this squad commands my entire concentration. Absolutely nothing – I guarantee it, nothing – will divert me from this course.”
Commencing his tenure at Arizona in 2021, Lloyd has led the Wildcats to three regular-season league titles, comprising two in the Pac-12 and the current year’s Big 12 championship. They have secured a top seed (No. 1 or No. 2) in four out of their five NCAA tournament participations, progressing to the Sweet 16 or beyond on four occasions.
This season, Arizona clinched both the Big 12 regular-season and conference tournament crowns, and progressed to the team’s inaugural Final Four appearance since 2001.
Over his five seasons coaching Arizona, Lloyd has compiled a record of 148 wins against 35 losses. His 148 victories represent the highest number achieved by any head coach in NCAA history during their initial five years.
Prior to assuming leadership at Arizona, Lloyd was affiliated with Gonzaga starting in 2000, functioning as an assistant coach beneath Mark Few for two decades. The Bulldogs qualified for the NCAA tournament annually throughout Lloyd’s presence within the program, a period during which he solidified his reputation as the foremost international talent scout and one of collegiate basketball’s elite assistant coaches.
Lloyd, along with the top-seeded Arizona team, is scheduled to confront Michigan in the Final Four match on Saturday.
