However, players for the Patriots had limited opportunities to offer their perspectives on Vrabel’s predicament. This changed upon Vrabel’s return to the team following his period away, with numerous athletes—including quarterback Drake Maye—demonstrating profound backing for their head coach.
Maye addressed Vrabel’s situation on Wednesday, asserting that the squad stands “here for our coach.”
Numerous other Patriots players rallied in Vrabel’s defense on Tuesday. Tight end Hunter Henry stated that Vrabel discussed the issue with the team and “handled it admirably,” as reported by ESPN. Henry further noted his unwillingness to delve into additional specifics on the topic.
Linebacker Robert Spillane affirmed that he would “support [Vrabel] just as he would be there to support me.” Spillane added that within the facility, the team’s discourse centers on “football,” indicating that Patriots personnel do not intend to discuss Vrabel’s personal scandal while at work.
Both Henry and Spillane held captain roles for the team last season.
Patriots enthusiasts seem to share this perspective. At an event for season-ticket holders on Tuesday, Vrabel was met with applause from supporters, who eventually gave the coach a standing ovation after the team’s radio commentator encouraged the gesture.
Vrabel attracted scrutiny after photographs of him and former Athletic reporter Dianna Russini were disseminated. The images depicted the duo seemingly at a resort together, holding hands, dancing, and sharing a hot tub.
Initially, Russini and Vrabel denied any misconduct. Russini, nevertheless, resigned from The Athletic after the publication commenced an investigation into the circumstances. Vrabel was then obligated to address the matter when additional photographs of the pair emerged. These specific photos differed from those captured at the leisure facility. Both Vrabel and Russini are married to other individuals.
In the aftermath of the controversy, Russini has deactivated most of her social media accounts and has retreated from public life. Aside from his absence on Day 3 of the draft, it is standard procedure for Vrabel, who is anticipated to lead the Patriots during the 2026 NFL season.
