Sinner wins Madrid, sets Masters record

Jannik Sinner achieved a historic milestone by becoming the inaugural male player to secure five successive Masters 1,000 championships, triumphing over Alexander Zverev in straight sets to claim victory at the Madrid Open.

The top-ranked Italian contender clinched a dominant 6-1, 6-2 win in just 58 minutes against the third-ranked global player, cementing his unprecedented accomplishment.

The 24-year-old Sinner had previously secured titles in the season’s initial three ATP 1,000 tournaments: Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte Carlo, in addition to a victory half a year prior in Paris.

“Considerable effort underlies this achievement. I commit significant dedication and make sacrifices daily. Clearly, witnessing these outcomes holds great importance for me,” expressed Sinner, who has now prevailed against Zverev in nine consecutive encounters.

“Inevitably, there will be periods where results decline, which is a natural part of the process. I am extremely pleased that I have maintained faith in myself. I consistently appear for every practice, striving to apply the correct effort with appropriate discipline.”

Sinner’s achievement exceeded the previous record held by Novak Djokovic, who had secured four successive event victories three times, and the Spanish player Rafael Nadal, who emerged triumphant in four consecutive tournaments during 2013.

Djokovic additionally claimed five successive titles twice: once spanning from Indian Wells to the Canadian Open in 2011, and again from the 2014 Paris Masters through to the 2015 Rome Masters; however, he did not participate in Monte Carlo and Madrid during those respective streaks.

The 38-year-old Serb also stands as the singular athlete to achieve a career ‘Golden Masters’ by conquering all nine Masters titles—a feat Sinner could potentially emulate should he secure a victory in Rome in the upcoming week.
