According to TSN’s Ryan Rishaug, the Edmonton Oilers are parting ways with head coach Kris Knoblauch. This development follows an earlier report this week from Frank Seravalli, which indicated that the Oilers had approached the Vegas Golden Knights requesting permission to speak with their former coach, Bruce Cassidy.
Knoblauch, aged 47, assumed coaching duties from Jay Woodcroft in November 2024 and immediately revitalized the team, guiding Edmonton to the initial of two consecutive appearances in the Stanley Cup Final. The Oilers were unsuccessful on both occasions, being defeated by the Florida Panthers twice. Following their elimination by the Anaheim Ducks in the first round of this season’s playoffs, they continue their quest for a Stanley Cup, a title they haven’t secured since the 1989-90 season.
What renders the rumored dismissal of Knoblauch notably perplexing is that the Oilers had extended his contract for three years, through the 2028-29 season, as recently as October.
Regarding his prospective successor, Cassidy was let go by Vegas with merely eight games left in the regular season. However, because Cassidy remains under contract and is still receiving compensation from the Knights, any interested clubs must still obtain approval from Vegas to converse with the former Stanley Cup-winning head coach. While this procedure typically serves as a mere formality in such circumstances, reports indicate that the Knights have declined to grant the Oilers, a fellow Pacific Division competitor, permission to speak with Cassidy.
Instead of outright rejecting Edmonton’s request, Vegas has prolonged the Oilers’ wait, as per Seravalli’s account, which further mentioned that the Los Angeles Kings are also seeking Cassidy’s expertise.
Cassidy, aged 60, possesses an NHL head coaching record of 470 wins, 254 losses, 9 ties, and 96 overtime losses. He guided the Boston Bruins to the Stanley Cup Final in the 2018-19 season. Four years subsequent, during his inaugural season managing the team in Vegas, he steered the Knights to their initial Stanley Cup championship.
Towards the conclusion of this season, John Tortorella replaced Cassidy and currently has Vegas leading the Ducks 3-2 in a second-round series, ahead of Game 6 on Thursday in Anaheim.
Regarding the Oilers, they experienced a significant decline in performance this season while under Knoblauch’s direction. Key offensive players, Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, even acknowledged this downturn. Edmonton recorded its lowest points percentage since the 2018-19 season, which was the last time the team failed to qualify for the playoffs.
In the contemporary NHL, head coaches are subject to exceptionally brief tenures. Although the Oilers achieved positive results with Knoblauch leading the team, their performance plateaued this season, and Edmonton is now reportedly opting for a change.
