During Monday night’s game, Alejandro Kirk lost hold of his bat, resulting in a shattered glass window at Nationals Park.
In the fifth frame of the Blue Jays’ eventual 3-2 victory against Washington, the Toronto catcher swung and missed, inadvertently releasing his bat and sending it sailing backward. The airborne bat landed directly in the camera bay situated in the Toronto dugout behind him, breaking a window pane.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported and the shattered glass remained contained—even though the flying bat sailed right over the head of MLB reporter Hazel Mae.
Although Toronto held a 3-1 lead during the plate appearance, Kirk ultimately struck out. Washington later narrowed the deficit to a single run in the lower half of the inning courtesy of an Andres Chaparro home run, though they could not draw any closer.
Kirk went hitless in his three plate appearances during the victory. He currently carries a .224 batting average, alongside three homers and 12 runs batted in.
With the victory, Toronto improved their season record to 49-58. Experienced pitcher Max Scherzer returned from his stint on the injured list, yielding one run and four hits over a 75-pitch performance. Scherzer, who previously secured a World Series title with Washington, was honored with two standing ovations from the local crowd.
