Very few things have worked out in favor of quarterback JJ McCarthy since the Minnesota Vikings selected him tenth overall two years ago, and his run of bad luck persisted during the franchise’s second exhibition match of the summer this past Saturday.
Aside from struggling on the field against the Baltimore Ravens, McCarthy—who currently serves as Minnesota’s second-string passer and is at risk of sliding down to third on the depth chart—may have also picked up another physical setback.
According to an August 22 report by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, McCarthy was brought down for a sack once and absorbed several hits throughout the game. The Ravens’ local television coverage also noted that the quarterback appeared to be grimacing in pain on the bench following his last series.
Medical staff members were seen evaluating McCarthy on the sideline shortly after he was pulled from the matchup.
Reporting on social media platform X, Alec Lewis of The Athletic observed that McCarthy was taking a severe beating on the field, calling the scene difficult to witness. He added that medical personnel approached the quarterback on the bench immediately following a third-down pass aimed at Myles Price.
While there are currently no detailed updates regarding his exact physical issue, McCarthy’s career has already been plagued by physical setbacks, including missing his whole first year in the league with a knee injury. Additionally, he was sidelined for seven matchups last year due to a combination of a high-ankle sprain, a concussion, and a hairline fracture in his dominant hand.
On Saturday afternoon, the signal-caller connected on 5 of his 10 pass attempts, totaling 81 passing yards. Over the course of two preseason matchups, the 23-year-old has completed 9 of 17 throws for 115 yards, while being sacked twice and failing to record a touchdown pass.
