This tactical approach, centered on intense counter-pressing, would grow to define high-energy offensive play under his guidance at Borussia Dortmund and subsequently Liverpool, though a different German top-tier club had already paved the way.

During the early stages of the 2008/09 Bundesliga campaign, the newly promoted side hosted Dortmund, capturing the attention of the traditional footballing elite.
Playing a pivotal role in that squad was future Chelsea forward Demba Ba, who remembers a specific fixture that deeply influenced Klopp and helped shape the tactical ideas of the future Liverpool manager.
“We were on our fifth match of the season,” Ba explains to FourFourTwo. “Hoffenheim were completely new to the Bundesliga.
“Our approach on the pitch brought something totally new to German football. We embraced an aggressive, attacking style, giving our maximum effort right from kickoff against any challenger. Our inexperience in the first division was barely noticeable because we compensated for it with sheer determination and courage.”
This attitude was on full display when the division’s newcomers went head-to-head with Klopp’s team.
“In that fixture, we raced to a 2-0 advantage over Borussia Dortmund inside the opening thirty minutes. I recall the match being incredibly high-tempo.
“By the final whistle, I was utterly drained because of the immense work rate required on the field. It was an amazing experience.”
It took several years for the true impact of that encounter to register with Ba, following a discussion with his former manager.
“Some time afterward, during a conversation with Ralf Rangnick, he told me a fascinating story,” Ba reveals. “Following that convincing loss, Klopp confessed to him that he resolved to style all his future teams after us.
“He put those principles into action at Dortmund and then adapted them for Liverpool. So, in some respect, we served as the blueprint for Jürgen’s pressing game.”
