In her first-ever appearance at the FIBA Women’s World Cup, Caitlin Clark put on an unforgettable show to help guide the United States team to a dominant 94–61 victory against China. Entering the contest as a reserve, she registered 14 points, pulled down 3 rebounds, and dished out a game-best 11 assists without committing a single turnover.
Her 11 helpers established a fresh American milestone for the highest assist tally in a World Cup opener, eclipsing the previous record of nine held by Alyssa Thomas. Furthermore, she became the initial US athlete to record a double-double in points and assists during a World Cup matchup since 1994, while simultaneously setting a national tournament record for the highest number of assists without giving away the ball once.
During her media session following the match, Caitlin Clark expressed her gratitude to her fellow players, emphasizing that their execution was the reason she was able to rack up 11 assists.
She remarked: “You know, obviously playing around so many talented players. Obviously our guards are incredible, and our post players too. But anybody I pass the ball to it feels like they’re never going to miss a shot. So that’s one of my goals when I come into the game, facilitate, play fast, set up my teammates, get into the paint, get some penetration. Especially with their zone, that was one of my focus points.”
