On Wednesday, the United States Ryder Cup squad revealed a revamped points structure for securing a spot on the 2027 team competing at Adare Manor. Over the course of the 2027 season, players can earn points across 31 designated tournaments, kickstarting with The American Express and concluding with the BMW Championship, which serves as the second postseason event in the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
Major championships from the preceding year, which previously contributed to the standings, will no longer yield any qualifying points under this updated format.
Included in these 31 qualifying events are the four major championships of 2027, The Players Championship, eight signature showcases, a pair of FedEx Cup Playoff tournaments, and 16 standard full-field events on the PGA Tour schedule.
The half-dozen competitors leading the American points standings after the BMW Championship will secure automatic roster spots. Following that, U.S. Captain Jim Furyk will choose his six wild-card selections during the week following the Tour Championship.
“Our team has put in a great deal of effort, and I am thrilled to introduce this revised selection criteria for the 2027 American Ryder Cup squad,” Furyk shared in an official release. “With a superb blend of experienced players and emerging talent, this framework will guide us in selecting the most competitive lineup by September 2027.
“As I’ve mentioned from day one, what truly drew me to this position is the incredible enthusiasm, unity, and strong bond shared by these American golfers. I look forward to the start of the qualifying window in January and watching everyone give their all to secure a position on the squad.”
The highest point allocations are reserved for the major championships, where champions will collect 3,000 points toward their overall rankings. The winner of The Players Championship will earn 2,850 points, whereas triumphs at signature tournaments and postseason playoff matches will award 2,250 points.
Victories in standard, full-field PGA Tour events will offer 1,500 points, a total slightly below the points given to second-place finishers at either a major or The Players Championship.
Each American golfer who qualifies for the weekend in these designated events will earn a portion of the tournament’s overall point pool. No Ryder Cup points will be available at alternate-field PGA Tour events, and the team-format Zurich Classic will only distribute points if both competitors are eligible to represent the United States, a rule that could influence team selections for that specific week.
