Every so often, a matchup occurs that completely reimagines the meaning of resolve and toughness within mixed martial arts.
Kickstarting the main card of UFC 331 on Saturday evening, Alonzo Menifield squared off against the previously unbeaten Iwo Baraniewski in a light heavyweight clash.
Although Menifield emerged from the battle with a split-decision triumph, he paid a heavy physical price. It was later disclosed that he sustained an open compound fracture in his left thumb…

The 38-year-old Menifield pushed through the immense agony to contest two additional rounds with the broken digit. Viewers watching the live broadcast remained unaware of the damage until the interval between rounds two and three, when the referee spotted the injury and summoned the cageside physician.
Following a quick medical evaluation, Menifield repeatedly insisted to the ringside doctor that he was capable of continuing, ultimately going the distance even as commentators and fans recoiled in pain whenever he threw or landed with his left hand.
This victory improves Menifield’s professional record to 19-6-1. He entered the Octagon coming off a first-round stoppage of Zhang Mingyang. Entering Saturday’s event as the UFC’s 14th-ranked light heavyweight, he could secure a matchup with a top-10 opponent once his hand recovery is complete.
For Baraniewski, who entered the cage as the clear betting favorite, the result marked his inaugural defeat inside the UFC. Now sitting at 9-1-0, this matchup also represented the very first time in his professional career that he was pushed beyond the opening five minutes.
This showdown was Baraniewski’s third appearance of the year, following quick work of Austen Lane in March and a subsequent first-round knockout of Junior Tafa in June.
