BETHANY, Okla. — On Thursday, Southern Nazarene University revealed the heartbreaking news that sophomore safety Tyler Ulrich has passed away just five days after suffering what was described as a “traumatic injury” during a match against Ouachita Baptist. Ulrich was just 21 years old.

The Division II private institution located in Bethany, Oklahoma, has not disclosed the details surrounding the cause of death or the specific nature of Ulrich’s injury.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our SNU football player, Tyler Ulrich,” stated SNU Athletics via a post on social media.

“This tragic loss resonates deeply throughout our campus community. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, teammates, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him,” the statement continued. “We encourage everyone to join us in keeping them in our thoughts and prayers.”

Ulrich sustained his injury during a 49-14 defeat on Saturday, which resulted in a nearly hour-long delay as he received medical care prior to being transported to a medical facility.

From Azle, Texas, Ulrich was in his third year at SNU, having made 16 starts across 20 appearances, with six of those starts occurring this season. He stood third on the team with a total of 36 tackles.
