British player Hannah Klugman earned her spot in the Lexus Wrexham Open second round following a triumph over Fiona Crawley of the United States.
Ranked 341st globally, the 17-year-old Klugman dominated her opening fixture with a 6-2 6-2 scoreline.
“That was an excellent performance. I’m extremely happy,” stated Klugman.
“My opening was very strong, and I felt her style complemented mine well, giving me space to construct points. However, it was certainly tighter than the result suggests, making it a fantastic first victory.”
Klugman previously made it to the quarter-finals of the W100 event when it was hosted in Shrewsbury.
A impressive second-set fightback enabled top seed Anna Blinkova to claim a win against Andre Lukosiute of Lithuania.
The French world number 72 claimed the opening set 6-4, but Lukosiute surged ahead with a comfortable 5-1 lead in the second set.
When a deciding third set seemed almost certain, Blinkova mounted a rally to push the set to a tie-break, which she swept 7-0 to seal a straight-sets triumph.
British wildcard entry Daniella Britton fell to Australia’s Lizette Cabrera in a captivating three-set battle that culminated in a final-set tie-break, ending 6-4 2-6 7-6 (7-3).
Titleholder Mimi Xu, native to Swansea, is absent from this year’s draw, choosing to participate in Canada’s W75 Saguenay competition instead.
