Stephen Thompson Announces Retirement After UFC 334

One of Mixed Martial Arts’ most celebrated strikers, Stephen Thompson, is set to step into the cage for his final bout at UFC 334.

Continuing his professional career well into his 40s, former UFC welterweight contender Stephen Thompson is scheduled to face Charles Radtke at Madison Square Garden during UFC 334. This event features a marquee heavyweight championship bout between Ciryl Gane and Josh Hokit, alongside a co-main spectacle pitting Kayla Harrison against Amanda Nunes.

Over recent years, Thompson has consistently brushed off rumors regarding his potential departure from the sport. Even though he suffered defeats in five of his past six appearances, he remains confident in his ability to go toe-to-toe with the division’s elite welterweights.

Now 43 years of age, the veteran martial artist is entering the closing chapter of his distinguished career. By his own account, Thompson will undertake his ultimate walk to the Octagon during one of the most prominent events of 2026.

Stephen Thompson confirms UFC 334 will be his final fight following a Hall of Fame-caliber career

During a recent discussion with Ozoon, Thompson revealed that his upcoming appearance at UFC 334 will serve as his farewell performance in Mixed Martial Arts.

“This is the last fight,” Thompson stated. “There is no better venue to bring things to a close than Madison Square Garden in New York City.

“Physically, I feel fantastic and in great shape, and I could certainly keep fighting. However, I now have a baby girl… I’m ‘Wonderdad’ these days. Having a child definitely shifts your perspective. As she grows up, we’ll see where things stand—you might even see me return down the line.” (h/t MMA Junkie)

Thompson launched his Octagon career at UFC 143 by knocking out Dan Stittgen with a head kick in the opening round. Throughout his journey, the former kickboxing star secured notable victories over high-profile opponents such as Kevin Holland, Johny Hendricks, and Jorge Masvidal.

He challenged for the welterweight crown on two occasions during his time with the promotion, battling Tyron Woodley to a majority draw at UFC 205 before dropping a decision in their quick rematch at UFC 209. Although he delivered several strong performances in his later years, Thompson was unable to re-enter the championship picture.

Heading into UFC 334, Thompson aims to deliver one last memorable knockout victory. Once the dust settles, his next destination in the sport could very well be an induction into the UFC Hall of Fame.
