By fending off two match points, Carlos Alcaraz overcame Taylor Fritz during their Paris Masters quarter-final clash, a victory that additionally paved the way for fellow Spaniard Rafael Jodar to secure a spot in the ATP Finals.
The Spaniard triumphed over Fritz with a scoreline of 6-7 (10-12) 7-5 6-3, effectively crushing the American’s ambitions to compete in the year-end tournament in Turin, Italy.
Following a hard-fought tie-break in which both competitors possessed opportunities to seal it, Fritz narrowly took the first set.
Although Fritz subsequently gained a service break in the second set, Alcaraz mounted a comeback to equalize the contest, rescuing a pair of match points and breaking Fritz’s serve two times.
Establishing a 3-1 lead in the final set, the 23-year-old Spaniard controlled the remainder of the match, ultimately sealing his victory via a forceful forehand winner.
“During those tough situations, I attempted to remain focused and maintain mental fortitude,” remarked Alcaraz, whose upcoming semi-final opponent will be either Casper Ruud or Nuno Borges.
“The two of us produced exceptional tennis, and I fed off the crowd’s excitement to put on the show they came to see—to keep them entertained.”
Thanks to Alcaraz’s win, 20-year-old Jodar guaranteed his entry into the main event, scheduled for November 15–22 at the Inalpi Arena in Turin.
In an earlier match, Tommy Paul saw his qualification chances slip away following a 6-4 4-6 6-3 loss to compatriot Ben Shelton, a result that sealed Frances Tiafoe’s place in the tournament.
Both 28-year-old American Tiafoe and Spain’s Jodar are set to make their first appearances at this prestigious tournament, which gathers the world’s top eight men’s singles competitors.
The lineup of eight qualified players comprises Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, Flavio Cobolli, Arthur Fils, Alcaraz, Shelton, Tiafoe, and Jodar.
