On his social media account, Connor Hellebuyck published a message addressed to Winnipeg Jets supporters, giving thanks to the fanbase, the franchise, and the local lakes of Manitoba.

“I am aware that asking for a trade upset and aggravated many individuals, particularly those who backed me during my career. I comprehend these emotions, and I wish for everyone to recognize that this was a remarkably tough choice,” reads the message.

“The honor I experienced while representing Winnipeg will stay with me forever, and I offer my warmest wishes to the Jets and the whole community.”

The Michigan native, aged 33, spent his initial 11 years with the Jets before asking to be traded during the preceding off-season, ultimately being dealt to the New Jersey Devils.

His trade demand alienated numerous supporters, many of whom voiced their irritation online and bade him farewell with harsh words.

Intense debates have unfolded online regarding the most suitable jeers to direct at Hellebuyck upon his return to Winnipeg alongside the Devils for their match on Nov. 10.

Supporters of the Jets are renowned for delivering some of the most clamorous, clever, and inventive taunts in hockey.

“Reflecting on my time in Winnipeg, I will forever appreciate the life my family and I established there, along with the individuals who became so significant to us. It was where I developed professionally and where our family began,” wrote Hellebuyck.

“A feature of Manitoba I always cherished was how deeply connected residents are to nature. Thanks to the abundance of stunning lakes and outdoor spaces, living there is truly unique. Among my fondest moments outside the arena are those spent out on the water fishing.”

Multiple factors influenced his choice to request a trade, “which included extremely tough situations affecting my family.”

He noted that his family elected to keep those details confidential.

Rumors have circulated suggesting the move stemmed from online abuse directed at him and his family following the Olympic Games.

Besides backstopping his national squad to a victory over Canada, he alongside several team members attended a ceremony at the White House, during which U.S. President Donald Trump conferred the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Hellebuyck—occurring at a moment when anti-American feelings in Canada were intensifying because of trade tariffs and Trump’s remarks about annexing Canada as the 51st state.

In September, Cheveldayoff informed journalists that the abusive behavior had intensified to such a degree that franchise security and city police stepped in, placing Hellebuyck’s residence in Winnipeg under heightened surveillance.

Throughout the statement, Hellebuyck expressed appreciation to the Jets franchise for giving him the chance to compete and placing confidence in him.

Additionally, he extended his thanks to his ex-teammates, coaching staff, athletic trainers, equipment managers, and “all those working behind the scenes.”
