Aaron Donald has made his return.
According to an announcement from the franchise, the defensive tackle is stepping out of retirement to suit up once again for the Los Angeles Rams. On Sunday, Donald finalized a one-year agreement worth $20 million, with the potential to collect an additional $10 million in performance-based bonuses.
Donald mentioned that he spent the past 13 to 14 weeks deeply committed to intense workouts, assessing his physical condition to ensure he was prepared for the rigors of professional football. His choice was heavily influenced by the Rams’ massive trade on June 1 to bring in defensive powerhouse Myles Garrett. Donald admitted that the prospect of teaming up with Garrett made the comeback highly appealing, noting he immediately thought it would be exciting to share the field with him.
“In my eyes, this roster is whole whether I am on it or not,” Donald shared. “Just having the chance to be included in this journey and stand alongside this group is something I don’t take for granted at all.”
His spouse, Erica, also played a crucial role in the choice, seemingly expressing her support via social platforms.
“Ultimately, my wife had an enormous influence on this choice,” Donald explained. “If she wasn’t on board with the idea, this comeback wouldn’t have happened.”
Following the trade for Garrett, supporters pleaded for the 35-year-old star to end his retirement, envisioning the creation of one of the most dominant and feared defensive fronts in NFL history. Though he took his time until Sunday, Donald ultimately delivered exactly what the fanbase desired. He had previously stepped away from the sport on March 15, 2024, sitting out the subsequent two seasons.
Prior to stepping away, Donald had accumulated 111 sacks across 154 career matchups. This tally places him 33rd on the all-time sack list since official tracking of the statistic began in 1982.

The tackle last appeared on the field during the 2023 season. He participated in 16 matchups for Los Angeles that year, racking up 53 combined tackles along with eight sacks.
Supporters were not alone in immediately picturing a reunion with Donald once Garrett was acquired. During the press conference introducing Garrett, head coach Sean McVay addressed the speculation and confirmed he had already reached out to Donald regarding a comeback.
McVay emphasized on Sunday that the timing of the decision was entirely up to Donald. Regardless of the outcome, McVay stressed that their bond remained incredibly strong.
“Our relationship is incredibly meaningful and goes far beyond the game of football,” McVay noted. “We have a rich history and have gone through so much together. There is deep affection between our families. For him to feel motivated to consider this and return to the team speaks volumes about the incredible people he surrounds himself with.”
He previously helped guide the Rams to a Super Bowl victory in early 2022, securing a 23-20 triumph over the Cincinnati Bengals.
Even though the process dragged on for several weeks, Donald admitted he had been leaning toward this choice for some time.
“I had a pretty good idea for about two weeks. I was in touch with Sean almost daily,” Donald explained. “We kept the lines of communication open, and I kept him updated on my physical state and general progress. I felt a bit guilty because I knew he was getting tired of fielding endless questions about me during training camp.
“I took all the necessary steps to assure myself that I was ready to do this. I avoided rushing the process because I wanted to make sure I made the absolute right choice.”
Walking away from retirement is a massive commitment.
“When you commit to a comeback, you have to throw yourself into it completely,” Donald stated. “You can’t hesitate; you must be fully invested. I needed to reach a state where I felt entirely dedicated to playing again. The past two years off were wonderful, so I had to deeply evaluate this transition from both a physical and psychological standpoint.”
An interesting side effect of Donald’s return is the adjustment to his Hall of Fame timeline. Once he ultimately decides to retire for good, his five-year waiting period for Canton eligibility will start over from scratch.
For now, Donald is perfectly fine putting Canton on hold. He is shifting his focus to getting ready for the Rams’ season opener on September 10 against the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, Australia. McVay noted on Sunday that they plan to approach his integration gradually, leaving it uncertain if he will suit up for the opening game.
In any case, an already formidable Los Angeles defense has just received an incredible upgrade.
