During the Atlanta Dream’s 106-81 victory against the Chicago Sky on Saturday, Angel Reese secured her place as the inaugural player in WNBA history to collect 500 rebounds within a single season.
She reached this historic milestone by capturing her fifth rebound with 1:53 remaining in the opening half. The play was set up when she blocked a layup try from Chicago’s Gabriela Jaquez, leading directly to the rebound.
The three-time All-Star wrapped up the game with 23 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, and 3 blocks. With this performance, she pushed her single-season record of double-doubles to 31, while also extending her streak of double-figure rebounding games to 16 straight matchups.
“Angel is shattering double-double milestones. She is breaking every rebounding record, including those for individual games,” Dream head coach Karl Smesko told Meghan L. Hall of USA Today on Sept. 17.
“This is the finest season she has ever played,” he noted. “When considering All-WNBA honors, she absolutely belongs in that conversation. She should also be named to the defensive team and be in the running for defensive player of the year.”
To back up the effort, Isobel Borlase put up a career-best 18 points, Allisha Gray contributed 17, and Rhyne Howard chipped in with 14 as the Dream pushed their record to 28-14. Atlanta, having triumphed in eight of their last ten contests, remains in contention for the third seed in the WNBA postseason. They will conclude the regular season with a pair of matchups against the New York Liberty (25-16).
For the Sky, Jaquez paced the offense with 14 points, while Kamilla Cardoso and Aicha Coulibaly contributed 11 points apiece.
Earlier in the year, Reese claimed the WNBA’s single-season rebounding crown by overtaking A’ja Wilson during a 26-rebound performance in a 78-71 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks on Aug. 24. That spectacular display also established a new high-water mark for rebounds in one game across league history.
Furthermore, Reese holds the third-most rebounds in a single WNBA campaign, grabbing 446 boards during the 2024 season. That achievement set a new rookie record and would have remained the historical peak had Wilson not eclipsed her with 451 rebounds in that same year.
