Jose Altuve, the Houston Astros’ celebrated All-Star, will be added to the roster of injured players, becoming the newest prominent Astro to be sidelined in what has become a season marked by numerous injuries.
On Sunday afternoon, the Astros organization confirmed that Altuve would be placed on the injured list due to a Grade 2 strain in his left oblique, validating previous statements made by general manager Dana Brown regarding Altuve’s oblique muscle injury.
The injury to Altuve occurred on Saturday, with diagnostic imaging performed on Sunday clarifying the specific type of ailment. The Houston team did not provide an estimated schedule for when Altuve might resume play.
During Saturday’s game, Altuve was hurt in the eighth inning while the Houston club was ahead 4-1. After grounding into a double play, he instantly clutched his left side in discomfort.
He proceeded directly to the Astros’ locker room, foregoing any attempt to advance to first base, and did not participate further in the contest.
This marks the second time since 2023 that Altuve has sustained an injury to the identical oblique area. In the 2023 season, he was sidelined for 20 days due to a left oblique injury.
Altuve boasts a distinguished career, earning All-Star recognition nine times, seven Silver Slugger awards, and previously receiving the AL MVP title. Prior to his current injury, over 42 games, Altuve’s batting line stood at .245/.326/.380, accompanied by 4 long balls, 12 runs batted in, and a single stolen base.
Altuve is now added to an extensive roster of injured Astros players, which already features shortstop Jeremy Peña, outfielder Jake Meyers, starting pitcher Hunter Brown, relief pitcher Josh Hader, and third baseman Carlos Correa, whose entire season has concluded because of a ruptured tendon in his left ankle.
These various injuries have played a role in Houston’s challenging start to the season. On Sunday, following an 8-0 defeat against the Rangers, the Astros’ record dropped to 19 wins and 29 losses.
