Most live, in-game interviews offer very little value, but this particular moment was a rare exception.
During the early frames of Tuesday’s NLDS Game 3—a matchup San Diego eventually won 4-3 to extend the series—the San Diego Padres and Milwaukee Brewers were locked in a scoreless tie when Milwaukee’s Sal Frelick hit a sharp line drive toward center field at Petco Park.
It was a solidly hit ball that seemed destined for extra bases if it found grass. However, Padres center fielder Jackson Merrill tracked it perfectly right from the moment of contact.
This sequence unfolded precisely while Brewers skipper Pat Murphy was speaking with FS1 sideline broadcaster Tom Verducci. Verducci had just questioned Murphy regarding his evaluation of his squad’s offensive approach so far. Just as the manager began his reply, Frelick made contact.
Below is Murphy’s reaction, which pivots instantly once he detects that the ball is headed straight for Merrill’s mitt:
“Well, we’ve been a bit impatient, I think we’ve chased a few pitches … Find the gap, Sal! Ah, damn it, Merrill!”
And with that, Murphy’s on-air chat came to an end.
The telecast immediately returned to the broadcast booth featuring Adam Amin, Adam Wainwright, and A.J. Pierzynski, who laughed together at the live moment they and the viewers at home had just experienced. Soon after, the television crew smartly cut to a tight shot of a solemn Murphy watching the field from the Milwaukee bench.
The entire sequence produced absolute television gold for baseball fans. In an era of sports coverage overflowing with awkward and uninteresting in-game conversations, almost none have surpassed the brilliance of this exchange.
