Over a professional playing career spanning twenty years, Diego Forlan represented clubs in eight different nations across three continents, as well as reaching a World Cup semi-final while earning over a century of caps for his country.
While this path yielded numerous memorable achievements, the 2010 Europa League final stands out as an exceptionally special moment for the ex-Manchester United attacker.
The striker played a pivotal role in Atletico Madrid’s 2-1 victory after extra time against Fulham in Hamburg, netting both of his team’s goals, which included a decisive strike in the 116th minute that shattered the Cottagers’ dream journey to their inaugural European final.
Forlan recalls driving Atletico to Europa League triumph
“That evening in Hamburg ranks among the absolute highlights of my playing days,” Forlan revealed to FourFourTwo. “It was a dream-like final, not necessarily due to the quality of the football, but because of how the story unfolded.”
Fulham’s incredible march to the final, occurring in only their second season of European football, required them to survive a group stage featuring Roma, CSKA Moscow, and Basel, before overcoming Shakhtar Donetsk, Juventus, Wolfsburg, and Hamburg during the knockout phases.
“Even though Fulham entered the match as underdogs, they proved to be incredibly tough opponents,” Forlan went on. “I opened the scoring thirty minutes in, but Simon Davies drew them level, pushing the final into extra time.”
As the minutes slipped away and a penalty shootout seemed inevitable, Forlan stepped up in the critical moment, capitalizing on an opportunity that came his way late in the second period of extra time.
“Just as a penalty shootout appeared unavoidable, Sergio Aguero fought for possession on the wing and picked me out in the middle of the penalty area,” he recollected. “I just managed to poke it with the end of my boot to secure the trophy for Atletico.”
The celebration that followed from Forlan was just as spontaneous as his decisive strike.
“I whipped off my jersey and dove headfirst onto the grass like I was diving into a pool,” he remembers.
To Forlan, the importance of that strike went far beyond merely putting another trophy in Atletico’s cabinet.
“That moment felt like pure triumph because it represented a true shift for a club that was beginning to regain its self-belief and stature,” he reflects.
“The Spanish capital, which was so accustomed to watching Real Madrid lift trophies, was suddenly bathed in red and white as thousands of supporters congregated at Plaza de Neptuno in an immense demonstration of passion.”
