Facing each other for the first time in nearly 16 months, Djokovic found it difficult at first to cope with Zverev’s powerful play, allowing the 29-year-old to claim the opening set by taking advantage of an early service break.
Nonetheless, the 24-time Major champion fought his way back into contention, capturing a crucial break at 5-4 in the second set to even the score.
The final set remained highly competitive with very little between them, but the experienced Serbian made his move once more at 5-4 on his opponent’s serve to decisively wrap up the win.
This win extended Djokovic’s undefeated streak in Beijing to 32 matches, bringing him closer to capturing his seventh China Open crown and clinching his first title of a demanding 2026 season, during which he has battled both fitness issues and inconsistent form.
“This season has presented a variety of challenges for numerous reasons,” Djokovic remarked.
“Nevertheless, I am still competing, fighting hard, and pushing the younger players to their limits. I am simply pleased to have found a way to win.”
Up next for Djokovic on Monday is a clash with the number three seed, Daniil Medvedev, who booked his place in the next round by defeating Francisco Cerundolo 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 earlier in the day.
Meanwhile, Polish player Hubert Hurkacz secured his spot in the semifinals after defeating Karen Khachanov with a scoreline of 7-6 (7-2) 6-2.
Hurkacz is set to match up against Australia’s Alex de Minaur, who overcame a slow start in his opening set against Andrey Rublev to ultimately secure a 1-6 6-2 6-3 comeback win.
