During an appearance on the YouTube program ‘Jamie Vardy’s Having A Party’ hosted by the former Leicester City forward, Mike Dean confessed to introducing secret amusement challenges into Premier League fixtures just for fun.
The former match official concluded a 28-year tenure in professional football when he stepped away from active refereeing in 2022, transitioning to a full-time role in the VAR room for the 2022-23 campaign.
Dean has frequently found himself at the center of public debate, as his comments since retiring have added fuel to rumors concerning corruption and collusion among top-flight referees.

“We would invent little challenges just for amusement. We’d tell each other at kickoff to see how far into the match we could get without using our whistle,” Dean explained.
“I managed to pull that off on several occasions in the top flight, naturally prior to the introduction of VAR. I once let play run for up to 25 minutes without a single whistle blow, simply letting the action continue indefinitely.
“Another trick of mine was testing how long I could remain strictly within the center circle during active play before being forced to move. It was just a bit of lighthearted fun on my part.
“My colleagues told me it was impossible, but during one particular fixture, I managed to stay there for roughly a quarter of an hour,” Dean added, prompting laughter from Vardy and his fellow presenter.
In his final year operating VAR, Dean sparked major outrage by opting not to direct on-pitch official Anthony Taylor to review an incident on the pitchside screen during a tense 2-2 tie featuring Chelsea and Tottenham.
Spurs defender Cristian Romero had yanked Marc Cucurella by his hair, yet Dean declined to intervene because, as he later admitted, he wanted to spare Taylor the extra scrutiny since he considered him “a close friend in addition to a colleague.”
Following his departure from officiating duties, Dean further intensified speculation regarding bias among elite referees during a Manchester derby in the 2024/25 season when he dismissed appeals for a spot-kick.
While pundit Gary Neville insisted Manchester United deserved a penalty for a challenge on Rasmus Hojlund, Dean brushed off the assessment on Sky Sports, stating, “Not in a match of this magnitude, mate.”
These recent remarks on Vardy’s online show have provoked fierce backlash online, with football fans wondering if Dean’s private antics had an unfair influence on the outcomes of matches.
