Real Madrid Eye Shock Move for Arsenal’s Mikel Merino

In an unexpected turn of events, Real Madrid have set their sights on Arsenal’s Mikel Merino to breathe new life into their squad.

The Spanish giants have endured a shaky start to the campaign under the leadership of Jose Mourinho, finding themselves playing catch-up in La Liga. The iconic Portuguese manager is currently searching for a tactical formula that maximizes the impact of Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr up front, supported by the creative talents of Jude Bellingham and Yan Diomande.

Following another impressive stint representing Spain during the international break, the Gunners midfielder has been identified as a potential solution, with the prospect of securing more regular minutes in Madrid than he is currently receiving with the Premier League side.

Merino was initially brought to the Emirates to provide squad depth for Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice in the center of the pitch. However, when a severe wave of injuries sidelined both Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz in February 2025, the Basque international was deployed as an auxiliary striker against Leicester City, marking the occasion with a brace.

This sparked a remarkable run of form, during which he found the net against Real Madrid in European competition and contributed five direct goal involvements when Viktor Gyokeres was sidelined last season. He carried this momentum into the World Cup, scoring twice during brief late-game appearances in the knockouts as Spain went on to lift the trophy.

After he added four more goal contributions during his latest national team outings, Spanish publication Fichajes suggests that the playmaker has established himself as a key target for Los Blancos in upcoming transfer periods.

According to the outlet, “The main reason he would fit at Real Madrid is his lack of regular starts,” adding that “Mourinho would acquire a versatile option comfortable in central or advanced midfield, offering strong physical presence and the capability to make late runs into the penalty area.”

Although he is naturally a central midfielder—and previously served as a central defender under Thomas Tuchel during his time at Borussia Dortmund—his current appeal is largely driven by his lethal clinical edge, having racked up 13 goals in his previous 24 games for Spain.

The 30-year-old has developed into a reliable target man for Mikel Arteta’s side, matching the defensive work rate and physical presence of Havertz when Arsenal opt for a direct approach, while also demonstrating the offensive instincts and runs required of a striker.

With Havertz facing fitness doubts ahead of the Premier League’s resumption this weekend, it will be interesting to see if Merino earns a spot in the starting eleven.

Meanwhile, Gyokeres has experienced a highly productive spell representing Sweden. Although he has a different style of hold-up play compared to other offensive options, Arteta has historically chosen him over Merino to lead the line when both players have been fully available.

The player carries a market valuation of €25 million according to Transfermarkt, with Arsenal preparing to face Leeds United at home as domestic football kicks back off this weekend.
