Jaylen Mbakwe, a cornerback for Georgia Tech, shared that he is recovering nicely following a frightening on-field collision with teammate Jordan Walker on Saturday, which required him to be stretchered off and transported to Grady Hospital during the Yellow Jackets’ defeat against Tennessee.
During the third quarter of the 45-24 loss, Mbakwe’s head collided with Walker’s knee while both players were attempting a tackle. Walker had to be helped off the field with what looked like a knee injury, while medical staff worked quickly to stabilize Mbakwe’s neck and head.
Although Georgia Tech head coach Brent Key was unable to provide an instant update regarding Mbakwe’s condition during his postgame press conference, the defensive back later took to social media on Saturday evening to reassure everyone that he was “fine and feeling well.”
This past offseason, Mbakwe transferred to Georgia Tech following a two-year stint at Alabama to start his collegiate career. Upon his initial commitment to the Crimson Tide, he was ranked as the nation’s 16th overall recruit and the second-best cornerback in the 2024 class, trailing only Ellis Robinson IV of Georgia.
Following the setback against Tennessee, Georgia Tech’s record fell to 0-2, leaving them with just one remaining non-conference matchup before they start ACC competition. On Saturday, the Yellow Jackets surrendered 299 rushing yards on 45 attempts and committed a pair of turnovers. This follows their Week 1 performance against Colorado, where Georgia Tech held a late advantage but failed to sufficiently drain the clock, allowing the Buffaloes 1:40 of possession to execute the game-winning touchdown drive for a narrow 14-13 victory.
