Sonay Kartal prolonged her remarkable run by defeating past Grand Slam winner Jelena Ostapenko at the Wuhan Open, advancing to her most significant career final.
Competing in merely her third tournament following a half-year layoff due to a back issue, the fifth-ranked Briton is now just a single win shy of claiming a WTA 1,000 trophy—an accolade second only to the Grand Slams.
Displaying remarkable poise, the 24-year-old earned a 7-6 (11-9) 7-6 (7-5) win over her Latvian opponent, Ostapenko, in an exhilarating semi-final encounter.
Despite falling behind 4-1 in each set, Kartal kept her cool, capitalizing as the world number 34 faltered during crucial moments under pressure.
In an extraordinary display, Kartal fended off three set points during the opening set and saved another trio in the second to seal an unforgettable triumph.
“It stands as perhaps one of the most demanding contests I have ever been part of,” Kartal reflected.
“There are moments when she is impossible to stop, so you just have to weather the storm. From a mental standpoint, this ranks among the finest displays I’ve ever produced.”
Currently ranked 170th globally, she becomes the lowest-ranked competitor to make it to a WTA 1,000 championship match since the tier was created in 1990.
Kartal, who held the 54th spot right before her extended break, is set to face either six-time Major champion Iga Swiatek or Roland Garros finalist Maja Chwalinska in Sunday’s title match.
By advancing to the final, Kartal—who previously achieved a career-high ranking of 44—will climb back into the top 50 and claim the British number one spot once the updated standings are published on Monday.
