Kimi Antonelli Continues Dominance, Beats Verstappen for Monaco Pole.

Kimi Antonelli’s exceptional season continues its impressive run without abatement.

The 19-year-old pilot for Mercedes secured the pole position at the Monaco Grand Prix on Saturday, surpassing Max Verstappen with a last-minute lap at the conclusion of the qualifying session. Verstappen had previously recorded the quickest time of the session, ahead of Lewis Hamilton, but Antonelli edged him out by a mere 0.043 seconds to claim the front spot on the grid.

For those familiar with the Monaco Grand Prix, the significance of beginning from the pole is well understood. With the increasing size of F1 vehicles, overtakes have become increasingly challenging on the narrow circuit within the principality’s boundaries. Overtaking maneuvers for the lead during the race itself are exceptionally uncommon. Verstappen and Hamilton’s primary prospects lie in a clever pit strategy or, potentially, an immediate pass shortly after the race commencement.

Charles Leclerc will commence the race from the fourth position, having made contact with the wall with his right rear tire just as Antonelli completed his decisive lap. Leclerc had initially set the benchmark lap time, but the three drivers ahead of him improved their times during their concluding attempts.

Following George Russell’s victory at the Australian Grand Prix, Antonelli has claimed success in the subsequent four consecutive races, establishing a 43-point advantage over his fellow team member in the championship standings. Russell struggled with pace throughout Saturday’s qualifying session and is slated to start in sixth place, positioned behind Verstappen’s Red Bull stablemate, Isack Hadjar, who starts fifth.

Russell’s underwhelming qualifying performance presents an opportunity for Antonelli to extend his lead to more than two complete race victories over Russell, only six events into the 2026 season. Each race triumph awards 25 points. Should Antonelli and Russell maintain their respective grid positions during Sunday’s race, Antonelli’s points cushion would grow to 58.

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris will line up on the fourth row of the grid. Both drivers were separated from Antonelli by over half a second, in contrast to the top six who all recorded laps within four-tenths of a second of each other.
