The New York Knicks achieved their initial best-of-seven playoff series victory by sweep since 1999 during the recent weekend. This feat was accomplished against the Philadelphia 76ers, even in the absence of OG Anunoby, who has been one of the top offensive players in this year’s playoffs.
Anunoby departed from Game 2 during the latter part of the final quarter due to a right leg hamstring injury, leading him to sit out Games 3 and 4. However, ESPN’s Shams Charania reports that Anunoby is anticipated to participate in the opening game of the Eastern Conference finals.
“Provided there are no complications, there is a positive outlook regarding his availability for Game 1,” Charania stated on Wednesday’s broadcast of ESPN’s “SportsCenter.”
“As of today, OG Anunoby engaged in various segments of practice. He also completed a solo session on the court. He has been out for precisely seven days due to a pulled hamstring. His condition is being assessed daily. The Knicks are slowly integrating him back, incorporating him into basketball-related exercises, and the belief and desire is for him to be ready for Game 1.”
The exact timing for Game 1 remains undecided, and similarly, the Knicks’ next adversary is also unconfirmed. This uncertainty stems from the fact that the Cleveland Cavaliers and Detroit Pistons are tied at two wins apiece in their semifinal contest, heading into Game 5 this Wednesday evening in Detroit. Given that at least two additional matches are slated for that series, Anunoby and the Knicks will gain further recuperation time subsequent to their elimination of the Sixers.
The leg injury sustained by Anunoby halted his powerful beginning to the postseason tournament. Across eight playoff appearances, the 28-year-old player has recorded averages of 21.4 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.9 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game. During that period, he has maintained an exceptional 61.9% shooting accuracy from the field, which includes a 53.8% rate from long range. Anunoby has successfully hit a minimum of two three-point shots in each playoff game he participated in this season, sinking four three-pointers on two separate occasions.
He is demonstrating significant influence on both offense and defense in pursuit of what would be his second NBA championship. His initial title was secured with the Toronto Raptors back in 2019.
