The Los Angeles Chargers faced a setback early on Sunday afternoon in Kansas City as they lost wide receiver Ladd McConkey.
McConkey suffered a concussion early in their 22-6 defeat against the Chiefs when his head collided awkwardly with the field at Arrowhead Stadium. He had made a short reception and was making a 17-yard gain during their second offensive drive of the game.
As he was tackled near midfield, McConkey’s head struck the ground forcefully. Although he exited the field under his own strength, he was seen heading back to the locker room with a towel draped over his head early in the second quarter.
The Chargers swiftly declared McConkey out due to a concussion. The details surrounding his injury, as well as an estimated timeline for his recovery, remain unclear.
On Sunday, he ended the game with just one reception for 17 yards. McConkey had come into the matchup with 183 receiving yards and one touchdown on 12 receptions for the season, which is his third in the league. The 24-year-old was inactive the previous week against the Denver Broncos because of a foot injury sustained in Week 4, although he had been cleared to participate on Sunday.
The Chiefs easily secured the victory on Sunday, primarily due to a couple of rushing touchdowns scored by Kenneth Walker, which improved their record to a flawless 5-0 for the season.
On the other hand, the Chargers are still searching for their first win and now hold a record of 0-6. They are one of only two winless teams in the league, joining the Miami Dolphins. Justin Herbert completed 22 of 37 passes for 204 yards with one interception during the defeat on Sunday, also leading the squad in rushing with 26 yards.
While the Chargers’ challenges this season extend beyond just their offensive performance, Herbert’s situation will undoubtedly become more challenging if McConkey is unavailable for an extended period.
