LeBron James Partners with PGA Tour to Launch Event for Aspiring Pro Golfers

LeBron James’ recently discovered passion for golf is reaching new heights following the disclosure of a joint venture between himself and the PGA Tour to establish a tournament for up-and-coming pro golfers in Akron, Ohio.

Scheduled for July 6-7, 2027, at the historic Firestone Country Club—a venue that previously hosted the PGA Tour for many years—the LeBron James Family Foundation Invitational will make its debut. This tournament is set to bring together a mix of seasoned pros, amateur players, and famous personalities, while also facilitating educational mentoring initiatives off the course. These sessions will connect young learners from James’ I Promise Academy with professional athletes participating in the PGA Tour’s Pathway to Progression Pro-Bound Five initiative.

Having first taken up the sport last year during his stay in Los Angeles, the 41-year-old superstar has fully committed himself to it. To share his development as a beginner, James recently started a dedicated YouTube channel focused on golf, with the goal of inspiring the younger generation and creating avenues for them to pick up the sport and enjoy its numerous benefits.

“Golf has turned into a true obsession for me, and I have personally witnessed the way this sport can unlock new pathways, forge strong connections, and unlock possibilities that a lot of youth aren’t even aware of,” remarked James. “Collaborating with the PGA Tour allows my Foundation to expose the children from my I Promise school, along with a broader audience, to golf early on, while backing gifted players who are pursuing their aspirations and maintaining my commitment to supporting my hometown of Akron, which is incredibly dear to me.”

The tournament will offer an additional platform for rising stars in the Pro-Bound Five initiative to compete. This scheme was launched by the PGA Tour in 2023 to award APGA Tour playing cards to the leading five competitors in the final year-end APGA Collegiate standings.

In taking up the game, James joins a growing cohort of high-profile figures and elite sportspersons from various leagues who have embraced golf lately. However, James stands out due to the sheer scale of his dedication; rather than treating it as a casual pastime to enjoy occasionally, he is dedicating significant effort and focus to master his latest pursuit.

This new venture at Firestone represents a deeper commitment to the game, and teaming up with the PGA Tour for his debut tournament highlights the immense reach and impact he possesses, despite being relatively new to the golfing world.

Having secured a two-year agreement with the Philadelphia 76ers during the off-season, the timeline for the conclusion of James’ iconic career on the court remains uncertain. His representative, Rich Paul, hinted earlier this summer that the forward might continue for another year or two, or potentially even stretch his playing days by another four seasons.

For quite some time, supporters have speculated about what James’ post-retirement life will entail. During his early years with the Lakers, his appearances in several popular cameos led some to think he might pursue an acting career seriously. Additionally, his desire to join an investment group to own an NBA team in Las Vegas is widely documented, and he will undoubtedly have a wealth of other commercial ventures to explore once his playing days are officially over.

Even though James continues to keep people guessing regarding his remaining time in the league, it has become increasingly obvious over the last twelve months that golf is going to play a central role in his life once he eventually retires from professional basketball.
