British tennis player Cameron Norrie fought off a match point during an impressive comeback victory over seventh-ranked Alex de Minaur at the Canadian Open.
The British player trailed the third-seeded Australian by a set and 5-2, but rallied back to secure a 5-7 7-6 (7-5) 6-1 win and advance to the round of 16.
Holding a double-break advantage, De Minaur had the opportunity to seal the match on his serve in the second set but committed a double fault.
Although he served for the match on two occasions, another double fault while leading 5-4 allowed his opponent to level the score in the set.
Ranked 37th in the world, Norrie narrowly claimed the tie-break before dominating the final set to seal the win in a match lasting two hours and 52 minutes.
“Winning this match was a fantastic achievement and a great indicator of my current form, giving me a huge boost in confidence,” the 30-year-old remarked.
“The quality of play was incredibly high throughout the opening two sets.
“From the very first point, [de Minaur] played with intense energy, and I had to raise my game to keep pace.”
Norrie, a semifinalist in Los Cabos just last week, is scheduled to play French player Arthur Fils as they vie for a spot in the quarterfinals.
Following De Minaur’s departure, fifth-seeded Ben Shelton stands as the sole top-10 player left in the men’s singles draw in Montreal.
Top-ranked Jannik Sinner and number three Novak Djokovic opted out of the tournament prior to its start, whereas the top seed Alexander Zverev suffered a defeat in his opening match.
Additionally, world number six Daniil Medvedev, seventh seed Taylor Fritz, and ninth-ranked Flavio Cobolli were all knocked out during the second round.
