On Wednesday, the PGA Tour declared that Matt Gogel, a competitor on the PGA Tour Champions, has received a six-month ban due to a breach of the association’s integrity policy. Gogel made wagers on PGA Tour tournaments where he was not in the field, resulting in a suspension that runs from August 23, 2026 until February 22, 2027.
“During 2024 and 2025, I unknowingly breached the regulations of the PGA Tour by making minor casual bets on golf matches,” Gogel explained in an official release. “I wish to clarify that none of these stakes were made on standard PGA Tour contests, PGA Tour Champions fixtures, or any match that I actually played in.
“I would never intentionally compromise the fairness and spirit of golf. This was a genuine oversight, and I am eager to return to action in 2027 on the PGA Tour Champions.”
The 55-year-old golfer is far from the only professional to face discipline for betting. Back in 2023, the PGA Tour handed down bans to Korn Ferry Tour competitors Vince India and Jake Staiano—for six months and three months, respectively—over similar violations. One year later, the DP World Tour issued a two-month suspension and a $2,500 fine to England’s Marco Penge after discovering he had bet on several golf tournaments.
Over his career, Gogel has captured six titles on the Korn Ferry Tour and secured a single victory on the PGA Tour, which occurred at the 2002 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. During this year’s PGA Tour Champions season, he participated in 17 tournaments, recording nine finishes inside the top 20 along with two top-five placements.
He occupies the 20th position on the Charles Schwab Cup earnings standings. With nine tournaments remaining on the 2026 PGA Tour Champions schedule, the top 36 competitors will earn a spot in the Charles Schwab Cup Championship this November.
