Enjoying a well-deserved rest day ahead of a crucial home series over the weekend against the San Diego Padres, the Rays must be pleased to see their playoff magic number sit at 16.
Predictably, as the owners of the league’s top record, Tampa Bay boasts the lowest magic number to clinch a postseason berth. With an upcoming six-game stretch at home, the Rays have an ideal opportunity to significantly reduce that figure, particularly given their stellar performance in front of their home crowd.
Though the Padres are sure to offer a tough test, the Rays will host the New York Mets immediately afterward. The Mets have struggled immensely relative to expectations this season, making that a series Tampa Bay is highly favored to take.
Because the Yankees represent their primary threat in the AL East and for the conference’s top seed, New York’s Thursday finale against the Houston Astros is notable. Still, the Rays will likely pay closer attention to the Yankees’ subsequent series against the Red Sox.
In a perfect scenario, a split series between those two contending rivals would allow the Rays to widen their divisional lead even further. Ultimately, Tampa Bay is well-positioned to secure a playoff invitation this autumn, as their magic number continues to move favorably downward.
