Rich Chou on John Martin’s PFL-MVP MMA Exit: “Crazy Sport, Crazier Business”

John Martin has resigned from his role as Chief Executive Officer of the recently merged PFL-MVP MMA venture, prompting reflections from a veteran backstage figure in the mixed martial arts world. Rich Chou, the industry insider in question, boasts extensive experience working with notable organizations such as Rumble on the Rock, Strikeforce, and Bellator MMA. Currently holding a leadership position at Ki MMA, Chou offered his perspective on Martin’s departure from the Jake Paul-backed fighting promotion.

Following Martin’s exit and his subsequent announcement framing the departure as a personal decision, speculations arose regarding potential internal conflicts behind closed doors. Having worked at Strikeforce when it was bought out by the UFC, and previously being on the purchasing side when Strikeforce bought Elite XC, Chou is no stranger to the complex dynamics of corporate mergers and takeovers in combat sports.

Reflecting on the development surrounding Martin’s departure from the PFL-MVP setup, Chou remarked during an appearance on Bowks Talking Bouts,

“I have experienced both sides of that dynamic, Dylan. One side is definitely far more enjoyable and way less chaotic [laughs]. Having lived through both ends, I think it highlights how wild this sport is, and how much crazier the business aspect of it can be. I wish the absolute best to everyone currently caught in the middle as this situation unfolds. It is an incredibly demanding industry, and my hope is that everything gets sorted out quickly and finds some stability, because there are truly fantastic individuals working there.”

“Following a fantastic year and the fruitful integration of PFL and MVP, I have chosen to resign from my role as Chief Executive of the merged organization. I am incredibly proud of our collective achievements and have absolute faith in the company’s future direction.”

“Nakisa and I collaborated very closely to unite these brands, and he is undoubtedly the right person to steer this venture forward. My gratitude goes out to the whole staff and the Board for their collaboration, and I will continue to support MVP both as a supporter and a former leader.”
