During the “Maroon and White” spring scrimmage on Saturday, veteran linebacker Daymion Sanford departed the field on a cart due to a lower-body ailment, as confirmed by head coach Mike Elko following the game.
Reports from AggieYell, On3’s Texas A&M platform, indicate that the incident transpired as Sanford, who serves as a team captain, was engaged in a tackle during a rushing play towards the end of the first half of the exhibition match. The game was paused, a medical cart was deployed, and the Texas A&M medical personnel applied a cast to his lower left leg before transporting him away from the playing surface.
Even with approximately two minutes left on the clock before the scheduled break, Texas A&M decided to initiate halftime ahead of time.
The moments following the injury were documented in a video by Travis L. Brown of KBTX Sports:
Sanford ranked as the fourth-highest tackler for a Texas A&M team that achieved its inaugural College Football Playoff berth last season. Throughout that period, he significantly progressed during his junior year.
Stepping up impressively when Scooby Williams was sidelined due to injury, Sanford transitioned from commencing only three games in the previous season to establishing himself as a key defensive player for a contingent that held the 36th national spot by conceding 21 points per game during the 2025 season. This defensive group excelled in the opening round of the CFP, limiting Miami, the eventual national second-place finisher, to a mere 10 points amidst blustery conditions in College Station.
During that specific contest, Sanford retrieved a fumble in the fourth quarter and equaled a team record with seven total tackles. He concluded the season accumulating 57 tackles overall, along with 9.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and one interception.
On Friday, Sanford was designated as one of five players from the Aggies to receive captain honors. The other individuals recognized were quarterback Marcel Reed, tight end Micah Riley, and safeties Dalton Brooks and Marcus Ratcliffe.
According to TexAgs, Texas A&M sophomore linebacker Noah Mikhail remarked after Saturday’s spring scrimmage, “Daymion exemplifies a truly exceptional caliber of player.”
“The absence of such a talent deeply affects the entire squad, particularly us linebackers. We convened for a prayer in the huddle. Our sincere hope is for his swift return to action.”
