England legend Carney, tennis great Clijsters join Birmingham takeover

The ownership group of Birmingham City has finalized the acquisition of the women’s football team, with celebrated England and Blues figure Karen Carney participating as one of several independent investors in the transaction.

Shelby Companies Limited (SCL) functions as a subsidiary of Knighthead Capital Management — an investment entity co-established by Blues chairman Tom Wagner.

They initially secured a controlling interest in the Championship club in July 2023, subsequently increasing their stake to a complete takeover last November.

Presently, they have obtained a 97% share in the female squad.

The remaining 3% has been assumed by a collective of “prominent female business leaders and global professional sporting icons,” which includes Carney, with her 144 caps, and three-time US Open tennis champion Kim Clijsters.
