As the National Football League’s free agency period commences in March, an additional seasoned quarterback will become accessible. Ian Cunningham, the general manager for the Atlanta Falcons, confirmed on Tuesday that Kirk Cousins, their current quarterback, is slated for release on the inaugural day of the 2026 league calendar.
Cunningham conveyed these remarks during an appearance on a local radio program. He mentioned having conversations with both Cousins and his representative regarding this transaction.
Despite his age at 37, Cousins demonstrated capability for the Falcons towards the end of the season. After Michael Penix Jr. sustained an injury that ended his season, Cousins took over as the starting quarterback for Atlanta’s last seven regular-season matchups. Over these games, he amassed 1,471 passing yards, registered 10 scoring passes, and was intercepted 5 times. Atlanta’s record was 5-2 during Cousins’ late-season starts, yet this performance was insufficient to secure a spot for the team in the postseason.
Although Cousins is aware of his impending departure, the Falcons plan to defer his release until March 11th, the commencement of the 2026 league year, primarily due to considerations related to the salary cap.
Upon his availability, Cousins is set to enter a free-agent quarterback pool abundant with seasoned players such as Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, and Joe Flacco. All four of these individuals might attract attention from various organizations; however, it appears improbable that any of them, apart from Rodgers, would be assured a starting position.
Cousins delivered an impressive twelve initial seasons in his professional football journey, but a ruptured Achilles tendon in his last year with the Minnesota Vikings introduced uncertainty regarding his prospects. He made a swift recovery from the ailment; however, his inaugural season with the Falcons in 2024 proved challenging, ultimately leading to his replacement by Penix.
Despite Cousins displaying renewed vigor towards the end of the season, it remains uncertain if this will translate into a prominent role for him in 2026. This experienced player may still possess talent in his throwing arm, potentially aiding a team in securing victories next season, but he will likely need to contend for a spot on the field with his next franchise.
