Sinner breaks Djokovic’s Masters 1000 record

Jannik Sinner eclipsed a decade-old benchmark held by Novak Djokovic for the highest number of successive sets claimed in ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, achieving this feat by decisively defeating Corentin Moutet of France at the Miami Open.

The 24-year-old Italian, ranked world number two, secured his 25th and 26th consecutive sets within the sport’s premier competitions, one tier below the Grand Slams, through a dominant 6-1 6-4 win that lasted 71 minutes.

Earlier, Sinner had matched the prior achievement of 24 consecutive sets won by 24-time Grand Slam winner Djokovic when he defeated Damir Dzumhur in his initial contest.

“I feel great satisfaction. The nature of this sport is unforeseeable, therefore we endeavor to maintain focus to the best of our ability, and we await what the upcoming round brings,” Sinner stated.

Sinner, who boasts four Grand Slam titles, emerged victorious at the last two Masters 1000 events – triumphing in Indian Wells earlier this month and Paris in November – without conceding a single set.

The athlete, formerly ranked as the world’s top player, displayed overwhelming superiority from the outset against Moutet, securing 19 of the initial 26 points in the encounter before claiming the opening set in 22 minutes.

Subsequently, Sinner converted his fourth break point opportunity, effectively breaking Moutet’s hold in the fifth game of the second set, then proceeded to serve out the match unchallenged for the win.

He is slated to face American Alex Michelsen in the round of 16, as he aims to press on with his quest to be the initial male player to accomplish the ‘Sunshine Double’ – which involves consecutively winning both Indian Wells and the Miami Open – a feat not seen since Roger Federer achieved it in 2017.
