Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have strongly refuted allegations suggesting that their ex-skipper MS Dhoni requested a 25 percent equity share in the team, labeling the rumors as completely unfounded.
Speculation regarding Dhoni’s purported equity demand quickly went viral online, with claims hinting that talks between the iconic wicketkeeper-batsman and the CSK leadership had hit an impasse. Nevertheless, the team administration has clarified that no conversations of this nature ever occurred.
CSK administrator refutes MS Dhoni’s 25% equity claim
As per online buzz, Dhoni had reportedly asked for a 25 percent share in CSK. The rumors further alleged that he subsequently lowered his requirement to 20 percent, whereas the team management apparently countered with just 5.5 percent.
These assertions have now been dismissed by a high-ranking CSK executive.
In a conversation with Cricbuzz, the representative confirmed that Dhoni had at no point contacted the franchise concerning an ownership deal.
“MS has never brought this up with us. We have not had any talks on the subject. Furthermore, we are unaware of any conversations he might have had regarding this with Mr. N Srinivasan.”
This clarification puts an end to the gossip that Dhoni and the CSK hierarchy were engaged in talks over a significant transfer of shares.
What are Dhoni’s real holdings in CSK?
Although Dhoni does not possess a 25 percent share in the team, he does maintain an active investment in Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited (CSKCL).
CSKCL operates as an unlisted entity, which signifies its shares are unavailable on open stock platforms like the BSE or NSE. Instead, share transactions occur through private channels.
It is believed that Dhoni holds over 100,000 shares within the firm. When measured against the 300 million-plus outstanding shares, his stake constitutes just a tiny fraction of the total business value.
The worth of Dhoni’s current equity is valued between roughly ₹2.6 crore and ₹3 crore, a sum that is vastly lower than what a quarter-ownership of the franchise would equate to.
The N Srinivasan family retains majority control of CSKCL
The organization’s shareholding pattern also offers crucial perspective on these viral assertions.
Ex-BCCI chief N Srinivasan along with his family are known to hold a commanding stake exceeding 55 percent in Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited.
This makes any sudden handover of 25 percent of the firm to Dhoni a massive financial deal, far beyond a minor adjustment to the former captain’s current relationship with the team.
Aakash Chopra casts doubt on the 25% equity rumors
Former Indian international and cricket pundit Aakash Chopra had similarly doubted the economic sense of these claims.
Given that top-tier IPL teams are valued around $1.5 billion to $1.8 billion, a 25 percent share would represent hundreds of millions of dollars in net worth.
Chopra emphasized that acquiring such a massive share would necessitate an immense capital infusion instead of being gifted freely.
“No one hands over $400 million to someone without payment. If you want a quarter of the equity, you must put up that level of investment.”
He further pointed to the massive brand power of CSK in the IPL tournament, making the rumored figures highly improbable.
Dhoni continues to be a cornerstone of CSK’s legacy, having guided the team to several IPL championships and becoming completely identified with the franchise.
At present, the team has established its stance: no discussions occurred regarding a 25 percent share, and reports of a contract standoff between Dhoni and CSK are completely rejected by the management.
