Thomas Hitzlsperger had an impressive career in football, representing Germany at the elite level alongside spells at prominent clubs like Aston Villa, Stuttgart, and West Ham.
However, in January 2014, a few months following his retirement, his choice to openly reveal he was gay resonated deeply way past the confines of the sport.
The ex-midfielder emerged as one of the highest-profile retired players to publicly discuss his sexuality, sharing his story openly during an interview with the German publication Die Zeit when male homosexuality was still heavily stigmatized across professional football.
Hitzlsperger reflects on his coming-out journey
Over ten years have elapsed since that announcement, leading Hitzlsperger to look back at the public reaction, the message he conveyed, and the guidance he offers to anyone currently facing challenges with their identity.
“I would guess around 95 percent of the responses were overwhelmingly supportive,” he explained to FourFourTwo. “The general feedback was how wonderful it was for someone to address this publicly. People mentioned how impactful it felt to hear someone who competed at top-flight levels open up about his journey.
“While I was considering revealing my sexuality, I certainly felt afraid,” he revealed. “Your mind wonders, ‘How will people react? Will they disapprove and judge me?’ I was wrestling with my own assumptions about society back then, alongside a personal anxiety about being rejected.
“Yet once I spoke out, I recognized that every single concern was unfounded, proving to me that the world was far kinder than I feared. Media narratives occasionally depicted society as unwelcoming, but after making my announcement, I caught myself thinking, ‘Why didn’t those negative outcomes happen? Why is the world actually so welcoming, and why are there so many kind individuals out there?’
“Because of this, I believe we ought to share more uplifting experiences rather than dwelling on tragic or gloomy perspectives. Although we need to address every topic, my main aim is to stay encouraging and emphasize that life can be truly wonderful. If you feel like an outsider, hold on until you open up—you will discover plenty of people ready to back you. You simply cannot perceive the possibilities ahead until you share your journey and embrace your authentic self.
“I often talk about experiencing a strong bond of community growing up within my family, and today I belong to another network—the LGBTQ+ community. Connecting with new individuals has broadened my perspective. Rather than worrying about individuals you might alienate through rejection, concentrate on all the incredible new people you would never have encountered had you remained silent. The greatest relief of coming out is freeing yourself from anxiety. Today, my energy goes into my career—acting as a business investor, executive, and television analyst—alongside my private life, with nothing holding me back.
“In every endeavor, I strive to achieve success, yet carrying constant fear prevents you from reaching your full potential. I recognized that suppressing my true identity was unsustainable, so making that public statement was necessary for my own well-being. The fact that it assisted others was an added blessing.”
Hitzlsperger believes his journey can offer comfort to others who find themselves struggling with their personal identity.
“If I were to speak to anyone questioning their sexuality who feels the world is hostile, what message would I offer?” he asks. “I received backing from countless individuals and now live completely unburdened by fear regarding who I am. Receiving that reassurance from former football colleagues and supporters meant everything to me. I felt immensely appreciative of everyone who voiced public encouragement.
“Following the release of my 2014 interview in Die Zeit, my old teammate Lukas Podolski hailed my announcement as ‘courageous’ and ‘a vital landmark for modern society.’ Meanwhile, my former manager for the national squad, Joachim Low, stated that I ‘earned respect from all corners.'”
