Player movement never pauses for any team, and Manchester United are attempting to keep their recruitment strategy moving forward despite the ongoing uncertainty surrounding their manager.

The fallout from a disastrous Sunday match at Old Trafford continues to envelop Man United. Following their 3-0 Premier League defeat against Bournemouth, head coach Michael Carrick finds his position increasingly precarious.

If Carrick is relieved of his duties, technical director Jason Wilcox reportedly considers ex-Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe a higher priority than Julian Nagelsmann as a feasible replacement.

Were Howe to assume the role, he would likely endorse United’s primary target. After prioritizing midfield reinforcements over backline additions during the summer, the Red Devils are now said to be redirecting their focus toward one of Howe’s previous pupils.

Newcastle full-back Lewis Hall was at the top of United’s wishlist during the summer window. According to Football Insider journalist Pete O’Rourke, the club’s admiration for the English international remains entirely unwavering.

“Hall continues to be a primary target for Man United, and a new attempt to sign him could happen next summer,” states O’Rourke, who noted that securing the defender would likely require an investment of no less than £70 million.

Ex-United full-back Gary Neville argued that prioritizing three midfielders over two was an error during the summer transfer window. He further asserted that his former club must spend significantly to fix the ‘absolute negligence’ of relying on Lenny Yoro on the right flank and Diogo Dalot on the left.

Hall represents a logical target for a financially powerful side seeking to solve a clear problem at left-back. Although Luke Shaw has featured more regularly over the past 18 months compared to prior years, United require a long-term successor and have clearly highlighted Hall as their top option.

“Although he signed a fresh contract at St James’ Park binding him until 2031, that has hardly dampened interest in bringing him to Old Trafford in the future,” O’Rourke added.

“This extension grants Newcastle total leverage regarding his destination, meaning any transaction must align with their demands, especially as he continues to play a pivotal role under Matthias Jaissle.”

Despite spending time on the sidelines due to injury, Hall has maintained a steady upward path since moving to Newcastle from Chelsea, initially on a temporary deal, back in 2023. The youthful defender has logged 80 Premier League matches for the Tyneside club over the past four campaigns.

Having frequently represented England at youth levels, Hall was awarded his senior international debut under Lee Carsley during the 2024 Nations League fixtures, and he has collected five caps under Thomas Tuchel during the current year.

Howe deserves substantial recognition for helping transform the youngster into a Premier League regular and full international, making a potential reunion immensely appealing to Man United. Nevertheless, Newcastle are bound to fight fiercely to fend off any prospective bids.
