I believe Anaheim is still forced to execute an additional transaction because if they end up signing Gauthier to a deal worth 15 or 15.5 million—though some expect it to exceed 16 million, let’s assume 15 for now—they will have issues.
They will be completely out of cap room, and starting a season right up against the upper limit makes it extremely difficult to manage a roster dynamically.
Because of this, I anticipate another trade or signing to clear roughly $1 million or $2 million in salary space, allowing them flexibility to make acquisitions at the trade deadline if a roster spot doesn’t pan out.
Regarding a potential destination where Kreider could truly thrive, I find the New York Islanders to be an intriguing option for him.
They currently have several developing prospects rising through their ranks.
They also seriously require someone who can establish a strong presence right in front of the opponent’s net.
It would also represent a return to the New York area for him.
It’s something we’ve witnessed before, where veteran athletes with long tenures on the Rangers, Islanders, or even the Devils cross over to a rival local franchise.
